Manners are determined at home. Etiquette is agreed upon behaviors or rules in a group setting.
Today we joined forces across county/program lines and looked beyond our learned manners to the ways that etiquette, behaviors, and relationships all impact each other. Dr. Jeremy Robinett, Associate Professor with WIU Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration, led us this morning in a thought-provoking session.
He challenged the team members to avoid assumptions in relationship development. He encouraged them to build upon and protect their names - one of the most valuable things we possess.
He talked about the importance of developing cultural capital - knowing how to act in the right ways in the right spaces. Underscoring all this was a discussion on etiquette, which we had the opportunity to practice.
Our #youngentrepreneurs networked and practiced shaking hands, all while balancing refreshments in hand. We had a great teacher, and now have a few more tools in the toolbox.
